Jun 14,2011HYDERABAD: Intermediate textbooks are still not available in the market even though junior colleges in the state commenced classes two weeks ago. While the Telugu Academy had taken the bulk order of all textbook printing in the state for the year 2010, they failed to provide colleges with language and subject textbooks.

While none of the 22 Telugu medium textbooks is available in the market, just six of the 22 English medium texbooks have now been distributed to colleges. The printing of the textbooks, which were to be brought out by April 18, began only in January.

According to the Telugu Academy officials, the Telugu textbooks will be made available only by September. "There is a demand for 25 crore textbooks but only about 20 per cent of the demand has been met this year," an official said. All the textbooks including the language ones will be available only by December, the officials admitted.
Meanwhile, some student unions staged a dharna before Telugu University on Monday, demanding an immediate supply of textbooks to colleges. "With academy delaying the textbooks, several private colleges are making students buy their own books for double the price," said AIYF representatives.
